Keep Sedona Beautiful Awards of Merit 2002

One of the most pleasant of KSB's many activities is to recognize individuals, organizations and businesses for good designs and special services which contribute to the goal of keeping Sedona beautiful.

Each year, a special committee of KSB goes about a very difficult job selecting those to be honored from a list which comes from a variety of sources. The members of the selection committee work through many meetings and site visits to study the proposed recipients.

It should be especially noted that these KSB awards are not given lightly, and that they are for specific accomplishments.

Yavapai County - Lighting Ordinance
KSB strives to keep Sedona beautiful by night as well as by day. The Sedona Dark Skies Committee of KSB and the Yavapai County Development Services Department have worked well together in drafting a new lighting ordinance. The Yavapai County Board of Supervisors enacted the new ordinance this year.

Last year KSB recognized the City of Sedona for the creation of its new lighting ordinance. Now it's our great pleasure to recognize Yavapai County for its new ordinance, which will help greatly to reduce light pollution and protect one of Northern Arizona's finest assets – our beautiful clear night skies.

Sedona Citizens Noise Abatement Committee
SNAC (the Sedona Citizens Noise Abatement Committee) was formed almost four years ago, and includes members of Quiet Skies Alliance, tour aircraft pilots, and others from the community. SNAC has achieved relative quiet in Sedona's skies through listening to each other and coming to a common understanding about the special nature of Sedona. Airport Manager Mac McCall is a permanent and very cooperative member of the committee, and it is he with the support of the Sedona Airport Administration Board who has made a real difference where the issue of aircraft noise intrusion in the community is concerned.

Arizona Public Service Company
The quality of experience for visitors who bring business to Sedona, and the quality of life for our residents, depend in large part on the scenic values nature has given us. Preservation of those scenic values was one of the primary goals for the founding of Keep Sedona Beautiful 30 years ago, and has continued to be one of our foremost objectives.

Therefore we are especially pleased to present this award to Arizona Public Service Company for its efforts to move its power lines underground where they do not interfere with views of our red rocks and treed hills. This is an excellent example of how the Sedona City government, the public, and the private sector can work together to achieve a goal of major local importance.

Friends of Garland Park
In 1997 the Sedona Academy held a Sedona Forum entitled "Creating a Healthy Community for Children and Youth." Participants at that Forum included youth, School Board members, parents and teachers, as well as representatives from local groups and the general public. They identified the need for a teen center and recreational facility for older youth. Some participants at the Forum also donated money and formed an action group to get it moving.

In 1998 the City of Sedona purchased 8.6 acres adjacent to Posse Grounds Park for development of community recreational facilities. A group of individuals formed the Friends of Garland Park, a non-profit organization, to turn that dream into reality. They encouraged the City to name that parcel after Bill Garland, a respected community leader who was instrumental in establishing the facilities at Posse Grounds long before the City was incorporated. Garland was the first chairman of the City's Parks and Recreation Commission.

Now, after years of hard work and generous contributions by many people, the Sedona Teen Center is a beautiful new reality – the first stage of the Garland Activity Complex. Those supporters are too numerous to name here, but most of them are listed in the Teen Center.

City of Sedona for Uptown Statue
The City government continues to improve the looks of Sedona, and to foster its reputation as a leading art community. As another of its major contributions to the improvement of our Uptown area, the City held a public art competition to create a bronze sculpture that would reflect the rich history of Sedona.

The winning sculpture was chosen by public vote. It was created by Clyde "Ross" Morgan and is entitled "Red Rocks and the Cowboy Artist". The sculpture is a tribute both to Sedona's beautiful red rocks and to another Sedona artist, Joe Beeler.

Gardens for Humanity, for Uptown Parking Lot
Last year KSB recognized the City for its well-designed and much-needed new parking lot in the Uptown area. The City did its part, and then the Gardens for Humanity organization carried the project forward with very creative and beautiful plantings and landscape design in recognition of the Schnebly family. Where some communities might have been satisfied with an acre of asphalt with white stripes, our community has a "parking park." KSB is pleased to recognize this inspired effort.

Canyon Portal
In recent years KSB had honored certain businesses along Highway 89A for exemplary landscaping design and plantings. Many other businesses have followed their example, making the highway streetscape more inviting.

The Uptown streetscape has undergone improvements which are equal, if not already better. In 1999 we recognized Arroyo Roble for its fine work, and KSB helped the City create the landscaped area at the crosswalk where the new sculpture by Clyde Morgan now stands. Now it's our great pleasure to recognize Canyon Portal for its beautiful stonework, plantings and ambience at the north retail building now commonly called "Canyon Breeze."

Pizza Picasso
This recipient has accomplished the creative recycling of a rundown, West 89A commercial strip building. Its understated street frontage includes a bermed courtyard with outstanding landscaping, coupled with a low-impact building color. Pizza Picasso is a tasteful addition to the ever-improving look of West Sedona.

MMMM LLC for Jordan Road Office Building
KSB is fortunate that we can recognize the efforts of businesses to improve the appearance of our community. Although the MMMM office building at 376 Jordan Road is still considered a work in progress, KSB feels confident in making this award this year. To nobody's surprise, considering who the principals are, the building now exhibits creative details and is a fine rebirth of what had been another old building.

• Plaque reads:

Sedona Creative Life Center
KSB recognizes the Sedona Creative Life Center for its exemplary new building design. KSB does not usually present awards to buildings with towers, nor to buildings with unusual night lighting. However, the Creative Life Center is located in a secluded area where these features do not create adverse impacts outside its own property. Therefore we can recognize the main building for its fine design and its place in the community.

Red Cliffs Plaza
West Highway 89A is definitely getting better. Several buildings have been greatly improved or replaced. But this year one stands out. Two years ago there was a dilapidated wooden structure, its street frontage crowded with cars bearing sale pennants and painted price signs.

That eyesore has been replaced by an attractive new stone building with a planted streetscape. We are very pleased to present our Grand Award of Merit for Most Improved Property to the Red Cliffs Plaza on West Highway 89A.

Norman McGee Award
The Norman McGee Award is the highest recognition that KSB can bestow on an individual who has demonstrated outstanding dedication and service to Keep Sedona Beautiful and to the community, above and beyond that which could be expected.

The Criteria for the McGee Award specify that "Such service shall have continued over a sufficient number of years to make such attributes apparent". This award is not given lightly or regularly - only when obviously and richly deserved. This year Keep Sedona Beautiful had the honor to present the McGee award to Justine Kusner.

The Plaque reads: "Keep Sedona Beautiful Norman McGee Award. KSB's highest recognition of an individual who has demonstrated outstanding dedication and service, continued over a number of years. Keep Sedona Beautiful is proud to present this honor in 2002 to Justine Kusner in grateful appreciation of her outstanding dedication and service".

Justine has been a very active KSB member for as long as she has lived here. She has served as KSB's secretary, and has been good enough to accept the great amount of time her husband Bill has spent as KSB president over the past three years. She previously earned the Ken Corey Award for her efforts on the landscaping work at the KSB Pushmataha Center, and last year she earned the KSB Special Award for outstanding community service to Friends of the Forest Sedona and the Verde Valley Archaeological Society.

Additionally, the following individuals were recognized for their commitment to public service which sometimes, but not always, includes service to Keep Sedona Beautiful:

Barbara Antonsen
Barbara Antonsen was recognized posthumously for working for many years to make Sedona a better place. Soon after she moved here in 1983 she served as president of the Western Welcomers, board member of the Sedona-Flagstaff Symphony League, and on the Citizens for Incorporation committee. She worked as a volunteer for the Sedona Arts center and the City of Sedona, and was a member of the Yavapai County Community Foundation. She also served on the founding committee of the Sedona-Oak Creek Unified School District.

Barbara was the founder of the Sedona Arts Festival, and its president from 1989 until health forced her retirement in 1998. She led a successful effort to preserve Posse Grounds Park for present and future generations. Sedona misses Barbara Antonsen, but will never forget what she did.

• Plaque reads: "Keep Sedona Beautiful SPECIAL AWARD 2002 to Barbara Antonsen for Outstanding Community Service."

Ross and Joyce Forney
Although Ross and Joyce Forney recently moved from the Sedona area, they remained very active in community affairs until the very day they left. Even after they had moved, the Red Rock News published a letter from Joyce encouraging the adoption of a public transit system here.

Another letter to the Red Rock News from their friend Janet Sabina said that to replace the Forneys, Sedona would need 10 couples or 20 people to move here. That might be an understatement. Their efforts included work for most of our community-minded organizations.

Ross was an organizer of the Sedona Coalition for Latino Community Development and co-founder of AGSET – the Advisory Group for Science, Engineering and Technology. He served as president of the Responsible Residents of the Red Rocks. Joyce was active with the Sedona Academy, the League of Women Voters, the Action Coalition for Transportation Solutions, and Keep Sedona Beautiful. They were active with Friends of the Forest, the Food Bank, and the Voice of Choice.

Joanne Johnson
Keep Sedona Beautiful is pleased to recognize certain individuals for exemplary community service. Joanne Johnson has been a leader in making Big Park a better place in many ways. Joanne has been a pillar of the Big Park Regional Coordinating Council. She has served for six years on the Big Park Wastewater Improvement District.

She also got together a group of volunteers who raised money and worked to create a beautiful landscaped median along Verde Valley School Road, and she keeps it beautiful by tending it with her own portable watering tank.

If we tried to detail all of Joanne Johnson's contributions which help to make our community a better place, we would run out of space.

• Plaque reads:
"Keep Sedona Beautiful Special Award 2002, Joanne Johnson for Outstanding Community Service"

 -TOP-

Herb Smith
Herb is a self-starter, a motivated volunteer for the school district and the community. He teaches a badminton course at the High School, and donated the equipment for it. He also holds evening classes for the public.

Herb works with the school administration on special projects like competitive salary schedules and comparative testing scores. He helped to develop a testing system for math at all three schools as well as assembly presentations about successful women. Herb is not afraid to get physical and dirty, working with the maintenance staff, even repairing flush valves and solving lighting problems.

When school opened last year, road construction created a safety problem for students, so Herb stood at the intersection with a clipboard to analyze traffic patterns, and worked out a solution with ADOT. He did the same at the "Y" intersection of 89A and 179, and convinced ADOT to change the striping which has improved traffic flow there.

Herb does all these things as a volunteer, and continues to do what he can to make our community better.
