Dear Neighbor,

We all know that Sedona, Arizona is rightfully described as "the most beautiful place in America.” We have seen its popularity grow exponentially over the past quarter century.  During this growth and development, Keep Sedona Beautiful has worked to preserve the unique natural environment in and around the Sedona area. I am writing to you today to urge you to help us continue our efforts.

A great small town doesn’t just happen - it takes a lot of hard work by many dedicated people.

Keep Sedona Beautiful, Inc. (KSB) is now entering its 35th year. We are a dedicated group of volunteers who are committed to working with city, county, state and federal governments, as well as civic and business leaders on your behalf to promote dialogue and encourage balance in the face of our area’s growth.  Whether you are a new member or a longtime supporter, your generous contribution will help us to continue to be an advocate for the preservation of greater Sedona’s natural environment.  Please help us build on our solid progress and continue our commitment to preserving the wonder of Sedona.

Help to conserve and protect Sedona’s scenic natural beauty now

and for the future

This red rock country is not just quiet azure skies above red rock palisades; it is also litter-free roadways, gentle but effective signage, awesome starry night skies, plenty of protected open spaces, buildings in harmony with the environment, and so much more. What would it be without continued preservation efforts?

The risk we all face is that the beauty that drew us here also draws more and more residents and visitors alike, and this growth, if unplanned or unchecked, can lead to irreversible damage to our most precious landscapes and wildlife habitats. The question we continue to ask is whether or not we can accommodate new residents and visitors and, at the same time, protect the natural beauty that we prize. We firmly believe the answer is yes and, with that positive attitude, we have come a long way.

A special year ahead.

With financial support from friends like you, Keep Sedona Beautiful has made great strides in the preservation of this amazing place we call home.  Our 35th anniversary year ahead will be filled with programs and projects that continue our mission and reflect our priorities:

  • Equipping, recruiting, and expanding the territory served by our famous KSB Litter Lifters, a corps of more than 120 volunteers who clean up litter from over 50 miles of streets and roads in our area-- saving our government nearly $500,000 each year.

  • Increasing the number of workshops offered by KSB including our very popular spring Native Plant Workshop held the first weekend in April.  Since 1979, KSB has worked with thousands of community members to increase the use of native plants and low water use landscaping (xeriscaping).

  • Educating the public about the advantages of the Sedona-Red Rock National Scenic Area (NSA) designation for the Red Rock Ranger District of the Coconino National Forest area around Sedona – a designation that will provide permanent protection and conservation of this special place for future generations. Simultaneously, we will work for the introduction of the legislation in Congress.

  • Recognizing excellence in building design, landscaping, and community service through KSB’s Annual Awards Program on February 11, 2007.

  • Protecting our area’s awesome star-filled night skies through outdoor light pollution monitoring and control and working with city and county governments to create stricter lighting ordinances.

  • Advocating safe and quiet skies through encouragement and cooperation with Sedona Airport, air tour companies, and Yavapai County.

  • Hosting a monthly KSB Speakers Series - bringing authorities before our community to share their views on pertinent wildlife, preservation, and conservation issues.

  • Ongoing maintenance and restoration of the historic Pushmataha Center, home of Keep Sedona Beautiful. This space serves as a resource for the community for meetings and events.

  • In 2005, Keep Sedona Beautiful succeeded in working with stakeholders to achieve the passage of Sedona’s first covered load ordinance, an ordinance which has led to improved road safety and litter reduction. In 2007 KSB will continue to work with the city of Sedona on education and enforcement.

  • KSB has helped to acquire more than 513 acres (so far) to add to our Coconino National Forest using federal Land and Water Conservation funds. The most recent addition was Thomas Point, a 27-acre parcel in Oak Creek Canyon, added in June of 2005. In 2007 KSB will continue to look for opportunities to preserve open space.

  • In addition, KSB will participate in the Coconino National Forest management plan revision process to ensure a voice for the care and preservation of this special area.

Because all of KSB’s efforts are made possible only by our members’ support, we ask you to take a moment now and make a commitment by renewing your membership or becoming a new member of Keep Sedona Beautiful.  KSB is a 501(C)(3) not-for-profit organization and your membership and contribution may qualify for an income tax deduction.  Consult your tax professional - new laws may offer a direct reduction to your adjusted gross income regardless of income and other deductions.

With your help KSB will continue to be a leader in preservation efforts in greater Sedona, as it has been since 1972. Please complete and mail the completed membership form on the envelope provided. I look forward to hearing from you…. and working together to KEEP SEDONA BEAUTIFUL.

  With warm regards,

  Barbara Litrell
