Noise Abatement Committee

Just as Sedona is a popular destination for ground visitors, so does the magnificent red rock landscape attract many aircraft sightseeing operations, both private and commercial. Of Sedona's 4 million visitors a year, 1.4 million visit the forest lands, and 219,000 visit the wilderness areas - Red Rock/Secret Mountain, and Munds Mountain. These wilderness areas were designated in 1984, before the advent of most, if not all, commercial air tourism in Sedona.

A Citizens' Noise Abatement Committee has been formed at the request of the Sedona Airport Administration Board of Directors. At a recent Airport Master Plan committee meeting, Cole Greenberg of Keep Sedona Beautiful was asked to bring together a representative group from a broad cross-section of the community to address concerns about the present and potentially increasing levels of aviation-related sound. The committee is meeting on a regular schedule and will report the results of its efforts to the Sedona Airport Board.

If you have any specific concerns or comments that you would like to have addressed by the committee, please send e-mail to Cole Greenberg.

Sedona Airport has implemented an "Aircraft Noise Survey" which was developed by the Sedona Citizens' Noise Abatement Committee. The purpose of the survey is to obtain a better understanding of the influence of aircraft sound in the greater Sedona area in order to monitor those areas that may be most affected.

Information from the survey will be collected in several ways. When someone calls the Sedona Airport Administration to make a complaint, the airport will use the form to interview the caller regarding the details of the situation. The survey will also be distributed at various public locations, local community organizations, and the Internet, which can then be mailed or faxed to the Sedona Airport Administration. (Note: we are in the process of identifying those locations. Locations will be listed here once they are identified.)

The completed surveys received by the Sedona Airport Manager will first be investigated, and in some cases action will be taken. When each survey has been processed, it will then be entered into a database that will enable the manager to create reports that help him to identify areas of concern.
