DESCRIPTION:Jayson Coil\, Assistant Chief Sedona Fire Department\, will will be speaking about “Preparing for Wildfires in Sedona: Insights from a Seasoned Firefighter”. \nThe live program will begin at 5:00 PM on Wednesday\, May 10th at KSB\, 360 Brewer Road in Sedona. Doors will open at 4:30. \nThis event will be held live at KSB\, and will not be simulcast on Zoom. \nWildfires are a significant threat to communities across the United States\, and Sedona is no exception. In this presentation Jayson will share his insights on the complex nature of wildland fires and how residents in Sedona can take steps to protect themselves and their homes. As the Assistant Chief for the Sedona Fire District and an experienced Operations Section Chief on a National Type 1 Incident Management Team\, Jayson Coil has a wealth of knowledge on how to prepare for wildfires and respond effectively to them. During this presentation\, he will also share outstanding photography he has taken of emergency events and of spectacular places he has visited. His photography has been featured in publications such as Arizona Highways and the New York Times.

SUMMARY:Speaker Series – Mike Dechter
DESCRIPTION:Mike Dechter\, NEPA\, Appeals\, and Litigation Coordinator at Coconino National Forest and Executive Director of the Arizona Mushroom Society\, will talk about “The Fungi Kingdom and Sedona Specific Fungi and Edible Mushrooms.” For anyone who’s even a tiny bit interested in the cryptic kingdom\, it should be a lot of fun! \nMike will start the presentation broadly with the basics of the fungi kingdom and why they are both helpful to us and fascinating in their own right.  Then he’ll talk more specifically about edibility\, covering the myths to the must-do’s for learning to eat wild mushrooms.  Lastly\, he will discuss the unique characteristics driving fungal diversity in the Sedona area and share details and photos of a number of locally found species. \nMike Dechter works for the Coconino National Forest and is past President and current Executive Director of the Arizona Mushroom Society.  He has led over a hundred wild mushroom forays throughout the state in support of education and scientific discovery.   Mike lives in Flagstaff and can often be found around Sedona looking for new and interesting fungi. \nThe live program will begin at 5:00 PM on Wednesday\, March 8th at KSB\, 360 Brewer Road in Sedona.
