This will be a group walk through Verde Valley School facilities and process. In doing this, we will discuss what VVS is doing, where we came from and where are we going. We will start in the dining hall where the students drop their food scraps off before stacking their dishes – a good starting point as we are discussing the development of soil. We will walk to the composting facilities and then to the farm while talking about the history, infrastructure and process. When we get to the farm, you will have a snapshot of how we got to where we are and then you will continue the tour with Michael Spielman with a walk through of the farm.
John Chorlton is the Director of Technology and Sustainability Coordinator at Verde Valley School. While his background is in multimedia production, coaching and education it was his assignment to manage compost at VVS that opened the door for his passion for sustainability initiatives. With the mission of the school as his guide and strong community support and collaboration, he has been able to push to create a model for a sustainable community. With the VVS team, John has been able to help develop a closed loop in food production with composting, a small farm and orchard, and seed processing facility.
