AFTERNOON KEYNOTE SPEAKER Selecting and Caring for Native Grasses and Shrubs Learn to identify and properly care for native grasses and shrubs to create sustainable and visually pleasing landscapes. Besides their seasonal beauty, native grasses occupy space that would otherwise support weeds, are excellent for erosion control, and can easily be divided and transplanted. Northern Arizona’s native shrubs serve similar functions in landscapes, but can become overgrown and increase fire hazard. Learn how to select and manage shrubs to compliment rather than dominate your landscape while still providing habitat for wildlife and birds. Jeff Schalau has been Agent, Agriculture and Natural Resources and County Extension Director for the University of Arizona Cooperative Extension in Yavapai County since 1998. He has a B.S. is in Forest Management and an M.S. in Natural Resources from Humboldt State University, Arcata, California. Jeff provides science-based information to Yavapai County residents in the areas of forest health, watershed management, noxious/invasive plants, range management, and horticulture. Jeff is also the author of the Backyard Gardener has spoken at KSB Native Plant Workshops for 16 years and received the Herkenham Award in 2008. |
