KSB urges you to evaluate your outdoor lighting and make any needed changes in order to protect our dark skies. By looking at your lighting and comparing it to the following illustration, it’s not difficult to determine if your fixtures are dark sky compliant.

If any of your fixtures are similar to those shown on the left, then you likely have non-compliant lights. All of these fixtures have dark sky compliant counterparts, shown on the right.

It’s sometimes possible to simply swap out fixtures without the need for rewiring, but you should always use a licensed electrician for such work.

Dark sky compliant fixtures are available from most hardware or lighting stores, and online sites sell them. Neither KSB nor your city or county government offices can suggest specific fixtures or installers, but Dark Sky International has a web page that can assist in identifying products. The Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition (FDSC) has a web page dedicated to identifying Dark Sky Commercial Lighting Products, and one dedicated to identifying Dark Sky Compliant Residential Products. Because FDSC already supplies this information, KSB is not supplying a list of our own.

If you need expert help to bring your outdoor lighting into compliance, always consult a licensed electrical contractor.

This is particularly important for businesses whose lighting must conform to the applicable code, which can be exacting. Businesses will need to have their compliant lighting design approved by the responsible governmental entity (city or county).

KSB has collected copies of the city and county codes that you can reference:
